The Hair Station Stylist Team Hiring & Onboarding Process

Initial Screening

Application, portfolio & resume review. An active and current Instagram portfolio is a must when you work with us. We will work together to build your dream clientele. 

Phone Screening

A brief phone call to discuss your background, availability, and interest in the position.

Meet & Greet

Come check out our salon, meet the team. meet with our hiring team to discuss your career goals and experiences. We'll discuss our salon's culture, values, and expectations, and answer and questions you may have about the role and our salon.

Technical Assessment

We may ask you to perform a basic hair styling task to demonstrate your skills and techniques.

Reference Checks

Before extending a job offer, we'll conduct reference checks to verify the candidate's work history and performance.

Job Offer

Once reference checks are completed satisfactorily, we'll extend a formal job offer to the selected candidate. The offer will include details such as salary, benefits, start date, and any other relevant information. Candidates will be given a reasonable amount of time to review the offer and make a decision.

Onboarding

90 Day Orientation: Upon accepting the job offer, the new team member will embark on our comprehensive onboarding journey. This entails a 90-day orientation and probationary period designed to familiarize them with salon procedures, policies and operations. They will also undergo training on our service menu, color line and will have the opportunity to test out technical skills to add services to their menu, ensuring confidence in skillset. Throughout this period, they will immerse themselves in our salon culture, understanding how they fit into our dynamic team.


Schedule: Stylists will have scheduled training days and days designated for client appointments. As they build their clientele and increase their productivity, additional days and hours behind the chair will be incrementally added to their schedule.

Welcome To The Team!

Education: We are dedicated to the success of our team members and achieve this by offering continuous support, training, and numerous opportunities for professional growth. Each week, our developing artists participate in in-house workshops, typically lasting about 1.5 hours. Once these artists meet specific requirements, they will engage in monthly workshops to further enhance their skills and knowledge. 


Schedule: Our stylist team enjoys the flexibility of choosing between 6-hour or 12-hour shifts, catering to individual schedules and preferences. With open communication with management, stylists have the autonomy to customize their work schedules according to their needs, allowing them to work as much or as little as desired while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.


Service Menu: As stylists excel in retaining clients, expand their clientele, and find their time increasingly in demand, they'll be supported in adjusting their pricing with guidance from management. While stylists are initially required to demonstrate proficiency in all services offered at The Hair Station, as their demand grows, they'll have the flexibility to streamline their service offerings or potentially introduce new ones that better cater to their clients' needs.


Coaching & Mentoring: Stylists will have the opportunity to engage with both leadership team members , including one on one time with the owner, to discuss their goals, share ideas, identify educational needs, and explore various other aspects. We are committed to investing in our stylists, fostering growth not only in their professional skills behind the chair but also in their personal development. At our salon, we highly value honest and plentiful communication between the owner, management, and all staff members, ensuring transparency and collaboration throughout our team. The owner and management keep open minds and love to hear feedback and ideas from all staff; even new members have helped shape what The Hair Station is today.

Stylist Team Growth Plan

Our level system supports stylists as they grow in skill, client experience, and business. Advancement is based on performance metrics like utilization and client retention, ensuring consistent growth and success behind the chair.

Description:

The Foundation Phase is where everything begins. This is where stylists focus on building a strong technical foundation, developing confidence, and learning how to deliver an exceptional, consistent guest experience.


During this stage, stylists are part of the salon support team, contributing to the flow of the day while gaining hands-on experience behind the chair. This is where habits are built, standards are set, and the groundwork for a successful career is established.


Progression is based on your performance—your productivity and your ability to retain clients through an exceptional experience.


Compensation: Hourly pay. Average $23,000 – $34,000 with full time hours


Description: 

The Growth Phase is about building momentum and taking ownership of your business behind the chair. Stylists are focused on consistency, refining their technical skills, and creating a strong, elevated guest experience every time.


At this stage, you’re actively growing your productivity and building client retention as you begin to establish a loyal clientele and define your brand.


Compensation: Hourly pay or 40% commission on sales + tips (average $38,000–$47,000 with full-time hours) 


Description: 

The Consistency Phase is where your business becomes stable and predictable. Your schedule is built on repeat clients, strong retention, and consistent productivity.


This is where stylists operate with confidence—delivering a high-level, repeatable guest experience while maintaining a steady, full book. Your business is no longer about building—it’s about sustaining and refining.


Compensation: Hourly pay or 43% commission on sales + tips (average $49,000–$59,000 with full-time hours) 


Description: 

The In-Demand Phase is where your business is thriving. You’ve built a loyal clientele, and demand for your time is consistent and strong.


At this level, your schedule is full, your retention is high, and your productivity reflects a well-established, in-demand career. You’re delivering an elevated experience at a high level, while continuing to grow and strengthen your business.


Compensation: Hourly pay or 45% commission on sales + tips (average $61,000–$85,000 with full-time hours) 


Description: 

The Elite Phase represents the top tier of stylists—those who have built a reputation that attracts clients to them. You are not just booked—you are in demand.


At this level, your productivity and retention are exceptional, and your name carries weight in your market. Clients seek you out because of your consistency, expertise, and results. You are a brand in yourself, driving demand through your reputation while continuing to operate at the highest level behind the chair.


Compensation: Hourly pay or 47% commission on sales + tips (average $87,000–$122,000 with full-time hours) 


Stylist Growth Programs

From Beauty School to Confidence Behind the Chair


The Bridge the Gap Program is a paid salon support position with advanced training, designed for licensed stylists who are ready to grow—but need real-world experience to get there.


This program bridges the gap between beauty school and working behind the chair by combining hands-on salon experience, structured education, and mentorship inside a real, fast-paced salon environment.

You won’t just learn—you’ll apply, practice, and build confidence in real time.


What This Role Includes

As part of our Salon Support Team, you will:

  • Support stylists and assist with daily salon flow 
  • Help create a seamless, elevated guest experience 
  • Maintain a clean, organized, professional environment 
  • Gain real-world exposure to services, consultations, and salon operations 


Alongside your role, you’ll participate in our Bridge the Gap Training Program—a structured education experience designed to accelerate your growth behind the chair.


Education & Training Included

This program combines technical skill-building with professional development to create a well-rounded stylist.


You’ll receive:

  • 12 Technical Workshops (approximately 4 hours each) 
  • 12 Professional Development Meetings (approximately 45 minutes each) 
  • Hands-on learning in a real salon environment 
  • Mentorship from experienced stylists 
  • Guidance in branding, content creation, and career growth 


Program Structure & Commitment

  • Must hold a valid cosmetology license 
  • All participants begin as part of the Salon Support Team 
  • Includes a 90-day probationary period to ensure mutual fit 

If a stylist position becomes available, participants may be:

  • Invited to apply based on performance, readiness, and team fit 

If a position does not become available, participants agree to:

  • Complete a minimum 6-month commitment 
  • With the opportunity to continue for an additional 6 months of advanced training and coaching

The Hair Station Apprenticeship Program gives you the opportunity to earn wages, gain real-world salon experience, and save $20,000–$30,000 on traditional school tuition—all while building a strong foundation for success behind the chair.

Program Overview

  • Trial Period: 3–6 months to ensure the right fit for both you and the salon 
  • Duration: 24 months of hands-on career training 
  • Focus: Technical skills, business knowledge, and professional development—emphasis on haircutting, hair color, and specialty color services 
  • Mentorship: One-on-one guidance from an experienced senior stylist 
  • Outcome: Graduate fully prepared to take the Maryland cosmetology state board test and earn your cosmetology license

  • Tools & Kit: The Hair Station provides a complete kit with all learning materials and tools (upfront cost $500–$750) 
  • Fees: No tuition—just state sponsorship application fees and kit materials
