In 1984, Mary Lewis and Debbie Marc, a dynamic mother-daughter duo, set out to make Elkridge and its surrounding areas more beautiful—one head at a time. They started small, working from just a couple of rooms upstairs in our current building while the downstairs housed a mix of businesses, including a baseball card shop and a doctor’s office. Over time, their dedication and strong ties to the community allowed them to expand, eventually occupying the entire building and laying the foundation for The Hair Station’s success.
While Mary and Debbie were building their dream, I was growing up just down Route 1 in Elkridge. In 2003, I graduated from Long Reach High School in Howard County without a clear career path. After a brief and unsuccessful attempt at college—including failing accounting miserably—I found my passion in the beauty industry. Inspired by my Aunt Connie, my childhood hairdresser, I enrolled in beauty school. In 2005, I graduated from The Fila Academy, a Paul Mitchell Partner School, earning my barber license and officially beginning my journey in the hair industry.
I gained valuable experience working at Hair Cuttery, Ulta Beauty, and a small family-run salon and spa, learning different business models from commission to booth rental. These experiences helped shape my understanding of the industry and ultimately led me to The Hair Station in 2013, which I found through a Craigslist ad. It quickly became my salon home, shaping me into the leader I am today.
After seven years as a stylist at The Hair Station, my best friend and husband, Christopher Genson, convinced me that I had what it took to be a great salon owner. In November 2019, we took a leap and purchased the long-standing business from Debbie. Just a few months later, COVID-19 forced us to shut down. But through hard work and resilience, we came back stronger than ever.
Today, The Hair Station is more than just a salon—it’s a space where creativity, expertise, and self-expression thrive. Our team specializes in hair color, blending artistry with advanced techniques to create effortlessly lived-in looks, bold transformations, and customized shades that enhance your individual style. We’re known for precision cuts, seamless blonding, and gray coverage that keeps hair looking fresh and modern.
As a business owner, I’ve stepped back from being behind the chair to focus on growing our team, curating top-tier education, and ensuring every client experience is exceptional. Whether you’re looking for a stylist who understands your vision, a space that feels welcoming and inclusive, or a community of professionals dedicated to making you look and feel amazing, you’ll find it all here.
We’re proud to carry on The Hair Station’s legacy while continuously evolving to provide the best in hair artistry.
And, of course, I’ll never forget my first official day as a salon owner—November 1, 2019, the day after Halloween. Debbie, who was known for her creative and over-the-top Halloween costumes every year, walked into the salon wearing something completely unexpected: a simple T-shirt with the word “Employee” printed across the front. After years of being the boss, she had officially passed the torch, and in true Debbie fashion, she made sure to mark the moment with humor. It was the perfect way to start this new chapter, blending the history of The Hair Station with the exciting future ahead.
We can’t wait to welcome you into our chair and help you feel your most confident, beautiful self!
