Hello!!
My name is Megan and I am the proud owner of The Hair Station and I'd like to take a moment to introduce/reintroduce myself and give you a little background about how our little salon got started!
In 1984, the former salon owners Mary Lewis and Debbie Marc (Mother and Daughter duo) started their own business, making the people of Elkridge and surrounding areas beautiful one head at a time. These two women, started out just renting a couple of rooms upstairs in the building we are currently in, while the downstairs had separate businesses such as a baseball card shop and even a doctors office! As the years went by, they built a great relationship with their community, slowly expanding and eventually taking over the entire building.
Fast forward to 2003, I graduated from Long Reach High School and of course had no clue what career path I would choose. After talking with my parents I did what many do and made the decision to go to college. I attended Howard Community College and after 1 semester, I knew that was not the path for me. Once this set in, I really had to do a deep dive into what made me happy and I realized that I have always really enjoyed the salon atmosphere, I am a bit of a beauty product junkie, changed my hair often, and one of my favorite people (Aunt Connie) is a hairdresser so that is when I decided to give beauty school a try!
I graduated from The Fila Academy, (a Paul Mitchell Partner School) in 2005 and started my career in the hair industry. My first gig was at the Hair Cuttery in Hickory Ridge Village Center and after two years learning, growing and building a small following, I decided to make a change. I moved on to work at Ulta Beauty in Elkridge, then on to a small Salon Spa in Ellicott City. These places all provided different experiences and eventually led me to answer a hiring ad on Craigslist.....(thats right craigslist). I went to check it out and I loved the small, laid back feel, the house itself was charming and I grew up in Elkridge so that was a plus. Little did I know back then that I had just found my new salon home!
Luckily, through all of life's changes, I have come across some amazing people and developed a very loyal following. People that supported me (personally and professionally) followed me wherever I went and I am so thankful for them. ♥
In 2017, I met the man of my dreams and my biggest supporter, Christopher Genson. I never had any intention of owning my own business, in fact as stylists we get asked the question often if our main objective is to own a salon and my hard answer was always, HECK NO!!!
Throughout the time of he and I being together my conversations generally focused a lot on ideas revolving around business... I realized I truly enjoyed the marketing aspect, the teaching of new stylists and he would regularly mention that I should take that next step into salon ownership. That bug he put in my ear did not take long to grow and I eventually built up the courage to ask Debbie if she would be interested in us buying her business. It took a little convincing but I think because of Debbie and I's relationship over the years, she knows that I would keep her and her moms legacy alive & true and I plan to do just that!
2019, November 1st was the official takeover date, Debbie and I switched roles, Chris and I became business partners and its been a crazy, fun, stressful, liberating ride ever since! This experience is one that I never envisioned and continues to bring me so much joy. I have found a new passion in growing a new generation of stylists and building lasting relationships with all of our customers and I am so excited for the road ahead.
Funny story about the day before the takeover which just so happened to be Halloween 2019! We love dressing up, encourage everyone to participate and ALWAYS look forward to Debbies costume. Debbie takes that extra bit of time, it's usually hilarious and she kept teasing us about it all week so we had high expectations to say the least. Assuming you see the pictures attached, you will see her clever costume! HAHAHA!!! Just one of the many reasons we love this lady.!
2020 was a bumpy road for everyone and I am proud to say that we were blessed to have made it through a pandemic. Things slowed down and eventually the county shut us down for 2 months after only being open for 4. To say we could have done that alone would be a lie, we have an amazing staff that wanted to get back to work ASAP and so many amazing customers that supported us through it and keep coming back!
Thank you so much for your continued support and loyalty!
